A Terrific Project For Home or School: Grow Native Tree Seedlings For Our Million Trees Cause!
Want to take part in hands-on, positive tree action — at home or school? Join our cool new Tree Seedling Growers Network. We have thousands of native tree seeds available now (thanks to a generous volunteer/donor) for local individuals, families, or schools to grow native tree seedlings for our planting projects!
We invite you to plant native tree seeds that we’ll mail to you (for FREE!), then care and raise them into little tree seedlings for about two years. (It’s pretty easy. We’ll provide full instructions to you plus email support as needed.) After two years, most will become twelve to fifteen-inch little conifer seedlings. In late Fall or Winter of their second year, we’ll get back in touch to ask you to give the seedlings to us (bare root style — we’ll show you how) for our planting projects and fundraising. Deal? (You can of course keep a few for yourself, if you’d like!)
Whether you have a warm window sill to plant a few in a spare container, a large pot on a deck to plant several, a small corner of a garden bed to plant dozens, or an even larger (protected) yard area to plant hundreds or thousands, we’ll send whatever amount of seeds you need.
The native tree seeds will be from any of five native species for our region commonly used for reforestation locally:
— Douglas fir,
— Western red cedar,
— Western hemlock,
— Sitka spruce, and
— Grand fir.
They’re not hard to grow, and they won’t take up much space. Approximately 25 seedlings per square foot can be grown (when planted in the ground, not a pot). A 4’x4′ protected area could therefore produce up to 400 tree seedlings! Awesome!
This is an ideal way to contribute to our million trees mission — from the convenience of home. It’s suitable for individuals or families, homeowners or renters. And it’s a terrific learning and community involvement opportunity for local schools and homeschoolers!
Ready to take part? All you have to do is fill out the form below. Note you must be located in Whatcom County. After you submit the form, you’ll receive an immediate confirmation email that will point you to our easy, complete instructions. (You can preview the instructions here before signing up.) Then about a week later, the native tree seeds should arrive in your mail!
Give seedling growing a try. It’s fun and rewarding! Thanks in advance for helping to green our community and do your part for local climate resilience, water/air quality, and biodiversity enhancement. It’s all part of our million trees mission for Whatcom County! Questions? Contact us about this network here.
