By contributing appreciated shares or other non-cash assets to our 501c3 nonprofit, you’ll avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated amounts, allowing you to make a bigger impact with your donation. Also, you’ll likely benefit from a higher charitable tax deduction because of the larger donation.

Plan a Legacy Gift
Create a lasting legacy by naming Whatcom Million Trees Project as the direct beneficiary of specific assets, a portion or percentage of your estate, or of your residual estate after payment of other specific bequests. As a 501c3 non-profit, all bequests to us are exempt from state and federal estate taxes and can therefore offer you substantial estate tax savings.
Together we can explore possibilities, including current and future projects in development, and recommend options for you to consider to create the multi-generational legacy that most strongly resonates with you.
We strongly recommend that you discuss any planned gift with your financial advisors to maximize your philanthropy and minimize your tax bill. Your advisor can help create a strategy that may allow you to donate stock or other securities now, for example, while taking an immediate income tax deduction and still receiving a stream of income from the funds for the rest of your life. There are some very powerful financial strategies available that are often unknown by donors.
Gifting via Your Will or Trust
Bequests are gifts made as part of a will or trust. Your attorney can include the necessary language in your will, in a codicil to your will, or in a revocable living trust. Below is a wording example:
I give, devise and bequeath [identify a specific sum or asset] to Whatcom Million Trees Project, Federal Tax ID # 86-3913386, located in Bellingham WA 98229 USA, to be used for the benefit of Whatcom Million Trees Project in such a manner as its Board of Directors thereof may direct.
